The key difference between semi-solid and conventional polymer batteries lies in the electrolyte system and manufacturing process.

Conventional Polymer batteries use a liquid electrolyte that is vacuum-injected into the cell, followed by a resting period to allow full electrolyte infiltration.

 

Semi-solid lithium-ion polymer batteries, on the other hand, replace most of the liquid electrolyte with a solid-liquid composite electrolyte. This requires additional processing steps, including thermal lamination to bond the electrolyte with the electrode sheets, pre-lithiation of the silicon anode, and further interface optimization before packaging to reduce internal impedance.
